Champions for a Drug-Free Grant County works with the community to reduce and prevent substance use and violence among youth, their families, and those in future generations.
Position Statement: Marijuana
In order to protect the youth of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, marijuana use should not be legalized in any capacity.
The federal government still recognizes Marijuana as a Schedule I drug. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not recognized or approved the cannabis (marijuana) plant as medicine. (NIDA, April 2017) Legalization in any capacity will lower the perception of harm from use of marijuana among youth which can lead to an increase in youth usage. According to the 2018 Kentucky Incentives for Prevention (KIP) Survey, cannabis remains the most widely used illegal substance by young people in Kentucky.
