Prevention Works
Champions for a Drug-Free Grant County began in 2003, following a meeting of concerned citizens, school personnel, and prevention professionals about youth drug use in Grant County. The coalition began by addressing youth tobacco use, which was of concern. Over the years, the coalition began to broaden our scope to include alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs.
In 2016, Champions for a Drug-Free Grant County received a five-year federal Drug-Free Communities Grant. In 2020, The Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program transitioned from a collaborative effort between Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to a collaborative effort between Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and in 2021 Champions for a Drug-Free Grant County received an additional five-year federal Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Grant. The DFC Support Program is the Nation’s leading effort to mobilize communities to prevent youth substance use. There are currently over 700 DFC funded coalitions across the nation.
The purpose of the DFC Support Program is to increase community collaboration among partners and reduce substance use among youth. DFC funded coalitions are required to work towards these goals as part of their efforts. Our coalition understands that work with community partners will determine our success in reaching these goals. It’s important that the coalition develops strong relationships within Grant County because local problems require local solutions.
